Sweetwater Union High School District

Davy Architecture, working with Lusardi Construction Company as an Integrated Project Delivery Team (IPDT), designed a Gym and Athletic Center for Montgomery High School, arrayed on two levels, nestled into a slope at the “center of gravity” of the High School’s outdoor athletic fields.  This arrangement serves to link the upper and lower playing fields, each accessible at grade from gym and locker facilities.

The structure is shaped with a large, sloped roof that rises to the north over the main gym.  North and south-facing clerestory windows provide abundant natural daylight.  A 150 KW, photovoltaic, solar electric system with optimum orientation is proposed on the roof.  The structure is flanked by two-story locker and training spaces.  The foyer is located in the southeast corner of the facility; it faces a new courtyard leading to a new library and classroom building to the south.  Placing the gym at the lower field level, with the lobby at the second level, allows back-filling of the slope, creating over 8,000 SF of reclaimed, usable surface for additional paving and landscaping.  (Unbuilt)
