Fire rescue air operations facility

Davy Architecture provided services for the design, engineering and coordination for the conversion of an existing 8,135-SF building into an “essential service” FAA rescue Air Operations Facility located at the Montgomery Field Airport in San Diego. The project provides a much needed, permanent facility to accommodate the emergency helicopters and crews that provide fire suppression, emergency rescues from remote areas, advanced life support and medical transport 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Scope included the development of an existing FAA building into a designated “station” area providing office and living spaces to accommodate continuous staffing. The scope consisted of nine dorms, five attached bathrooms, and two shared bathrooms, a living room and meeting space, non-commercial kitchen, communications room, conference room, physical training room, and additional offices. Additional improvements also include the structural retrofit to the existing structure for upgrade and to accommodate new exterior window openings along the north wall. The team also developed a fire riser to support a deferred fire sprinkler system, fire alarm system, emergency generator and ADA upgrades to the path of travel, parking, restroom, and door landing areas.
